A medium is a way or means of communicating or exchanging goods. So messages can be communicated through the medium of sound, signs, gestures etc. The plural is media and this normally refers to the press, TV, radio and (increasingly) the internet. Like a lot of other group words ('team', 'government' etc) 'media' can also used with singular verbs: You can find both 'The media is ...' and 'The media are ...').

Money was developed as a convenient medium of exchange for goods.

He refused to talk to the media about the reports until a full meeting of shareholders had been held.

A mode is a way or means of doing something – especially a way of working, or travelling. It’s also quite formal. So, you can talk about a mode of production or a mode of transport and also about different modes of operation of a machine.
