A notion is an idea. It’s used especially to talk about new or strange ideas. When someone knows nothing or very little about something, we can say they have only a vague notion or no notion.

He has no notion what we are talking about.

a principle

A principle is a basic idea in a topic, which explains or controls all the other ideas. If you agree something in principle, it means you agree about the basic point, although you still want to negotiate about the details. In politics, principles can also mean moral beliefs about what’s right and wrong.

The complicated import rules go against the principle of free trade.
