When you undertake a project or a task, you do it – or at least agree that you’re going to do it – so this can also be used as a more formal word for ‘promise’. And an undertaking can be either a project or a promise. The verb is often used with the word 'research' - 'conduct' is another word that means the same when it's used with research and a more informal word for this is 'carry out a research project'.

 

Students are required to undertake research projects in small teams.

The new road programme is a huge and expensive undertaking.
