a domain
A domain is an ‘area’ – especially when you’re talking about the area in which someone has power, authority or ownership. It’s used to talk about the internet and also, in law, if something is in the public domain, it means everyone is free to talk about it – or that no copyright exists, so that you can freely copy a document. Normally, copyright expires 50 years after a person’s death, so then the writings, music etc of that person are in the public domain.
